Floods are the most common and destructive natural disasters in the United States. According to articles in The Washington Post and USA Today, 80% of the people hit hardest by Hurricane Harvey lack flood insurance. Which means these people will need to rely on their own resources, charity or federal disaster aid to assist with re-building, replacement and displacement costs.
Properties located within the FEMA designated “high-risk” zones are required by law to carry flood insurance. Properties located outside of the “high-risk” zones are not required to have flood insurance and many choose not to because of the cost or the belief that they are not vulnerable to flooding.
